Schaltschrankbau 04/2021: Busbar machining equipment from Alfra ensures power and safety in control cabinets

They are made of copper, shine red and are extremely conductive - without busbars, literally nothing works in control cabinets. As a kind of vascular system for the required electricity, they take on a significant function in terms of smooth processes, wherever large facilities are managed. One condition for good results: Accuracy. Because where electricity flows and has to be distributed, millimetres matter. Alfra GmbH, with three production sites in Germany, manufactures special tools and devices for control cabinet construction, among other things. The manufacturer with headquarters in Hockenheim is not only attaching importance to a precise knowledge of the working environments of the users - new features in the product line of busbar machining are improving the service life of the high-quality devices and are protecting the health of the people who operate the machines - in the sense of the greatest possible occupational safety.

Take PVC, for example - as an all-rounder, the basis for a multitude of different applications from floor coverings to shoe soles. In the control cabinet industry, the thermoplastic polymer has been a common basic material in the production of cable ducts and cable insulation for a long time. PVC is made flexible and flame retardant by the addition of plasticisers. The disadvantage of these halogens: especially in case of fire, the additives release toxic emissions - with considerable damage to people and building fabric. As a consequence, halogen-free cable ducts and cables are already mandatory in the tendering process for corresponding projects. The tool manufacturer Alfra has been producing cutting devices specially designed for control cabinet construction for almost 20 years. The VKS 125 for cutting wiring ducts to length is one of the classics in the company's range and has had to adapt to this development.
